Derby veteran Kaboul relishing Boro battle
Younes Kaboul has played in his fair share of North London derbies but as he prepares for a first Tees-Wear battle the French centre-back is adamant the Black Cats will be ready.
Kaboul arrived at the Stadium of Light a year ago as Sunderland avoided relegation at the expense of local rivals Newcastle United.
And now they will take on their other near neighbours in Middlesbrough after the Teessiders were promoted to the Premier League last season.
Sunderland kicked off their season with a late defeat to Manchester City, while Boro drew 1-1 with Stoke, but Kaboul insists those results will have no bearing on the derby.
“It is a derby and you have to win, that’s it,” explained the defender. “Nothing has changed following last week’s game; we’ve stayed focused and we’re working hard.
“We have this spirit and we’re strong mentally in the dressing room so hopefully it will be like this ahead of every game.”
“Boro will come here with the intention of attacking while also staying strong at the back, and as you said when a team has been promoted they want to show why they’re in the Premier League.
“We’re aware of that and we respect every team, but it is a derby and we’re playing to win.”
