Gudmundsson promises to supply a spark at Burnley

Johann Berg Gudmundsson topped both the goal-scoring and assists charts for Charlton last season – now the Iceland playmaker can’t wait to share the load at Burnley.

The winger finished last season as the club’s top goal-scorer – with a modest six – though still managed to supply 11 assists as Charlton slumped into League One.

And while the Premier League will undoubtedly be a step up, at least Gudmundsson has a couple of proven goal-scorers to take the weight off his shoulders.

Andre Gray hit 23 goals in Burnley’s promotion campaign while Sam Vokes, one of Wales’ heroes at Euro 2016, chipped in with a vital 15.

It’s unlikely that the pair will quite match those hauls in the top-flight but Gudmundsson insists that they will not be feeding on scraps if he has his way.

“I take pride in (my assists). As a winger you want to set up goals, I set up 11 last season,” said Gudmundsson, who starred in Iceland’s shock run to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals earlier this summer.

“I was joint top in a struggling team, it’s not too bad, so hopefully I can set up a few goals here and score as well. As a winger you need to have that creativity.

“They are two great strikers who score goals for fun so I will hopefully create a few chances for them that they can stick in the back of the net.

“It was time to move on and the Euros were a good way for me to showcase myself, but I did quite well in England over the last two years and I showed people I could play in English football, so it was important for me to move this summer.”
