Jamie Vardy now shunning the party

Nine years ago Jamie Vardy had to be home by 6pm thanks to the electronic tag on his ankle.

His curfew was imposed on him after he was charged with assault while protecting a deaf friend, and the then non-league footballer even had to be substituted after 60 minutes by Stocksbridge Park Steels every week and jump into the back of his parents’ car to make it home in time.

But, after his heroics in Leicester City’s remarkable rise to the summit of English football last season, the 29-year-old striker has revealed his rise to fame has led to a surprisingly similar turn of events.

“It is carnage,” he joked. “I basically can’t go out at the minute and I don’t leave my house – I have put myself on a curfew but without the tag on my ankle

“It was alright-ish before, but now it doesn’t matter where you go. It changed after breaking the record, when I scored 11 league goals in a row.

“Now I prefer to stay at home and spend more time with the kids and on my computer, time with my wife. I’m still pinching myself all the time at how the last few years have gone.”

Vardy was strongly linked with a move to north London giants Arsenal this summer, but has now put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at the King Power Stadium.

And with Champions League football on the agenda, as well as the Premier League title to defend, 2015/16 football writers’ player of the season Vardy is champing at the bit to get going once again.

“I always used to watch the Champions League, no matter who was playing, but this season I’ll miss it because we’re in it,” he added.

“My best memory of the competition will be when Manchester United won the treble [in the 1998-99 season].

“I was on a school trip to the Lake District and they managed to get a television in the canteen so we could watch it.

“Now I can’t wait to hear that music at the King Power Stadium for the first time.”
