McAuley has no plans for retirement
West Brom’s 36-year-old defender Gareth McAuley insists he is as hungry as ever to compete in the upcoming Premier League.
The Northern Irish international, who turns 37 in December, is on a one-year rolling contract with the Baggies but has no intention of retiring just yet.
McAuley could reach 200 appearances for West Brom this season, having racked up 176 since signing from Ipswich Town on a free transfer five years ago.
“I’m determined, hungry as ever to play games and hopefully I can put in performances where I get picked and play because everyone wants to play football,” he said.
“I’ve had a great career so far and hopefully there are a few miles in me yet. I feel good. There’s a long season ahead but I’m looking forward to it.”
Following his country’s Euro 2016 success, McAuley completed his first 90 minutes for his club against Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.
And the veteran defender insists the shorter summer break has not been a problem.
“I feel like I haven’t been away fitness-wise,” he added
“I don’t usually take two days off so I got a few days off. I’ve been away with the family. It’s worked out well; it keeps you going which is good.”
