City’s Kolarov happy with centre back switch

Aleksandar Kolarov is more than happy to be used as a centre-back by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola although admitted it was not a change he had anticipated.

Guardiola shifted the Serbian left-back into his new role during pre-season, a stark change to the defender who was originally brought to the club as an attacking wing back.

City, with new signing John Stones, have conceded just five goals in six Premier League games to date despite the continued absence of talisman Vincent Kompany.

It would appear Kolarov’s shift is paying off for City with them unbeaten in all competitions so far this season and Guardiola’s passing style in particular suiting Kolarov.

“I am enjoying playing centre-back because it’s not like typical defender, we are more involved with our play,” the Serbian said.

“For me it’s a comfortable change, it’s a big change for me, I’ve never played centre-back before, I’ve played midfielder but never centre-back but I am enjoying that position.

“To be honest I didn’t think I was a going to change position but when the new manager came he put me as a central defender.

“I am trying to do what he wants from me not just me but for the other players too. At the moment it’s going good but the season is very, very long.”
