Koeman: Everton’s Gueye can become league’s best

Everton fans can be forgiven for being a little disheartened when the club signed Idrissa Gueye after a poor season at Aston Villa, but boss Ronald Koeman thinks he can become the best midfielder in the Premier League.

Gueye has impressed since moving to Goodison Park and was instrumental as they came from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough and move second in the table.

The 26-year-old was part of the Villa squad which exited the Premier League with a whimper last season, which made Everton’s decision to swoop for him surprising.

But Koeman is delighted with his contribution so far and expects him to only get better.

“It’s amazing what the boy shows in every aspect of football – in winning balls, in winning tackles, his decisions on the ball and good passing,” lauded Koeman.

“It’s a fantastic signing and, in my opinion, in that position in the team he will become maybe the best in the Premier League.”

Everton have a number of high quality midfielders, and Gueye admits he loves being part of a strong squad.

“I’m enjoying it very much being here, I’m happy and it is a big chance for me to play for a big team. To play with players like Ross Barkley and Gareth Barry is big for me, and for my family,” he said.

“But it is only the beginning of the season and we have to keep going and stay focused.”
