Long gutted at missing Saints chances, says Redmond
Santi Cazorla’s last-minute penalty winner will have been preying on Southampton’s minds all the way home – but Nathan Redmond admits Shane Long was also left kicking himself.
Cazorla fired Arsenal to a 2-1 win from the spot after Jose Fonte grappled with Olivier Giroud, though Laurent Koscielny could have been flagged for offside.
But Long, off the bench in the second half, was guilty of fluffing his lines on numerous occasions.
And the striker’s worst miss came after Dusan Tadic’s neat flick left him with only Arsenal keeper Petr Cech to beat.
And though, all in all, the Saints put in a performance to be proud of at the Emirates, Redmond refused to lay all the blame on the officiating.

“It’s devastating because of all the hard work we put into the game,” he said. “To not come away with anything due to a controversial decision is devastating.
“We had good in spells with a good 30 minutes and we faded a little where we took our foot off the gas, but we were always in the game and looked like we were going to score.
“I think if Longy had put his chance in one-on-one then it’s a different game, but those situations and little moments in the game are what define them.
“We’ve just got pick ourselves up and go again next week.”
