Mustafi: Arsenal fans made me feel right at home

Shkodran Mustafi battled back to end his Arsenal debut on a high – and admitted afterwards that the fans had made all the difference.

The German centre-back – who joined from Valencia on deadline day in a deal thought to be worth up to £35million – made his bow against Southampton on the weekend.

And, after a shaky start, the former Everton academy graduate recovered to play a key role in Santi Cazorla’s late winner.

It was the centre-back’s lofted pass that released Olivier Giroud who won the penalty that Cazorla converted.

And on a day when fellow deadline day signing Lucas Perez also made his debut, there was much for Mustafi and the team to cheer.

“It was important to play until the end, we know how football is today,” he said.

“If you don’t concentrate for 90 minutes, you lose points. We concentrated until the end, and that’s what gave us the winner.

“I’m happy for the three points first of all, but I’m happy for how the supporters received me here and how the team made me feel part of it.”
