Watford’s Gomes loves transfer deadline day

There are many critics of the transfer window and its timing, but Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes does not share their disdain.

The 35-year-old himself experienced the drama of deadline day when he interrupted his nightmare in north London with Tottenham Hotspur to join Hoffenheim on loan in January 2013.

Though there were no incomings at Vicarage Road in the hours before the most recent transfer window closed last month, Sean Murray, Alex Jakubiak, Allan Nyom and Ikechi Anya all departed.

Those that complain about the transfer window believe it should close before a ball has been kicked and unnecessarily disrupts the opening weeks of the season.

But Gomes, who has made 86 league appearances for Watford, admits he sits firmly in the opposite camp of people who are swept up in the drama and unpredictability of transfer deadline day.

“I like the last day because we can get more players and make the squad even better,” he said.

“We can focus more on our team, because every time it is a difficult period for everyone.

“No-one knows where to go, if they are going to stay.

“That’s why I believe everyone is excited about the last day.”
