Aguero still relishing life at Manchester City under ‘picky’ Pep
Sergio Aguero gives off the impression he would be the same free-scoring superstar under any manager, but the Manchester City hitman insists he is flourishing under Pep Guardiola.
The 28-year-old has scored eleven goals in eight outings under Pep at City, including two hat-tricks, not displaying any rustiness despite missing three games through a disciplinary ban.
While he is currently on international duty with Argentina, Aguero believes the Catalan’s attention to detail is what is spurring him on to new heights in the City jersey.
And having now gotten used to Guardiola’s high-intensity style of pressing, Aguero admits it has been hard to go back to old habits for his country.
“He [Guardiola] wants me right as a nine, but then he gives me more freedom too,” he said. “He asks me to move all around the attack.
“On the other hand, Tata [Martino, ex-Argentina boss] wanted me between the two defenders, to create more space for Leo [Messi], Fideo (Di Maria) or Pastore or Banega.
“Pep is different. Pep is very picky about everything. It’s good. The good thing is that I’m getting used to him and automatically going straight in to pressing the centre-backs.
“On the other hand, here at the national team I did it against Peru, and I realised I left the midfield unprotected.
“I’m used to do it but in this case it’s Pipa [Gonzalo Higuain] who should do it. Sometimes on the pitch I run, press and forget it.”
