Blind keeps his confidence in Man United’s front line
Daley Blind insists Manchester United have got no concerns with sticking the ball in the net, despite failing to score for the third Premier League game in a row against Burnley.
Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands as the Red Devils missed a string of chances and had Ander Herrera red carded in Saturday’s 0-0 draw.
United had 72 per cent of the possession and racked up 37 shots in the match – the team’s most goalscoring attempts in any Premier League game since Opta records began in 2003/04 – but were denied time and time again by former keeper Tom Heaton.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the biggest culprit for the hosts, having 12 shots to no avail, and while the 35-year-old Swede had more shots than any other player this season – with 70 in 10 games – he has not scored in six Premier League matches, which is his longest dry spell since 2007.
But while Blind is adamant the problem is not up front for United, who also drew blanks against Chelsea and Liverpool in the league this month, he admits the scoreline against Burnley was hard to believe.
“I think the team performance was positive and we had a lot of energy,” he said.
“We created chances and I think we also did well in defence, we didn’t give much away. We were on top of them. We didn’t give them any space.
“We played attacking football and I think that’s what the people want to see. The only thing is we had to finish. It was a bit frustrating [not to score].
“Of course, with a sending off, it always makes it a bit more difficult, but we could manage it. Even when we had 10 men, Burnley were so much back into their own box and we created a few chances. It sounds like I am repeating myself but I think that was the story of the game.
“It is hard to believe we didn’t score one goal. I hope it’s just one of those days because we have some great strikers and some great midfielders who can score goals well.
“I’m not worried about that. I will try to see it as one of those days.”
