Lloris’s save was one of the best, says Spurs team-mate Vertonghen
So sure was Javier Hernandez that he had scored for Bayer Leverkusen against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night he berated the fifth official standing a yard away behind the goal.
But replays showed keeper Hugo Lloris had successfully clawed the ball off the line to preserve a point for Spurs and defender Jan Vertonghen has described the save as the best he’s ever seen.
The north Londoners, looking for the second successive away victory in the competition, were on top in the first half but had a storm to weather in the second period with Lloris outstanding.
The draw leaves Spurs second in Group E at the halfway stage with a great chance to qualify.
And Vertonghen felt indebted to Lloris.

He said: “It’s one of the best saves I’ve ever seen live.
“People talked about Joe Hart’s recent save for England against Slovenia but I think this one is right up there as well. It’s an unbelievable save.
“That’s what goalkeepers are for, but this is different.
“I think everyone thought it was in apart from Hugo.
“I saw it straight after the game and all credit to Hugo, we owe a big part of this draw to him.”
