Matip tipped as Liverpool’s next Alan Hansen
Joel Matip could be the next Alan Hansen for Liverpool – according to club legend John Aldridge.
Matip has impressed for the former Reds striker with his form at centre-back this season – forming an impressive pairing with Dejan Lovren.
On Monday night Matip was at his best in keeping Zlatan Ibrahimovic largely anonymous at Anfield in the 0-0 Premier League draw.
The former Schalke defender also found time to bring the ball out of defence and offer a creative outlet for Jurgen Klopp’s side on the front foot.
His through ball to Emre Can nearly created the opening goal and with that talent on the ball in his locker – Matip is earning high praise indeed.
“I have been particularly impressed with Matip, who was my Man of the Match on Monday and kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic pretty quiet,” said Aldridge.
“He can also create chances out of defence, as he demonstrated with his pass for Emre Can in the second half.
“When teams sit back, you need someone who can step into midfield from the back. In my day, we’d have Alan Hansen bringing the ball out and he’d sometimes get as far as the opposing back four.

“Matip is capable of doing that. When teams play with one or even none up front, it gives a centre-back licence to go upfield. Matip is adding an extra dimension to our play.
“I was impressed by his partnership with Dejan Lovren. Partnerships are key at centre-back and the pair are starting to develop an understanding.”
