Poch retains faith in Spurs striker Janssen

Vincent Janssen has not made the impact he would have envisaged when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, but boss Mauricio Pochettino has thrown his full support behind his misfiring striker.

Janssen was signed to offer reliable support to Harry Kane, who has carried the burden of finding the net for Spurs almost single-handedly in the last two seasons.

And with Kane out injured, Janssen has had the perfect opportunity to showcase his talent and prove to the White Hart Lane faithful that the £16m the club spent on him was worth it.

However, the Dutchman has struggled and is yet to score from open play, with two penalties all he has to show for his efforts.

Respected pundits, including Graeme Souness, have criticised the 22-year-old and cast doubts over his ability at the highest level but Pochettino insists he is standing by his man.

“We are very happy with him. We need to understand that he’s 22, he’s come in from the Netherlands, a different league, and always we need to give time,” he said.

“But one thing is clear, that he is a player who works a lot, who is always involved and the commitment he shows in every game and every training session is fantastic.”
