Stekelenburg repaying Koeman faith for Toffees

Maarten Stekelenburg has shown exactly why he was trusted with the number one job at Everton according to manager Ronald Koeman.

The Dutch goalkeeper has been in sensational form to start the season, and produced arguably his best display yet saving two penalties in a 1-1 draw against Manchester City over the weekend.

But it was just from the spot that he impressed, with another sensational save from Kevin de Bruyne earning high praise from Koeman.

And having faced a pre-season battle with Joel Robles for the starting spot at Goodison Park, Koeman is delighted to see Stekelenburg repaying the faith shown in him.

He said: “He’s a very good goalkeeper; he played the World Cup final, he played a lot of games, a lot of experience and that was the reason to sign a goalkeeper.

“We need at least two or three goalkeepers. He won the fight with Joel in the pre-season and he’s showing why he’s the first goalkeeper at Everton.

“You need the best goalkeeper of your life (against City) and he was. The two penalties, normally it needs to be a goal, but the first one was not so bad.

“That was a good choice from Maarten to go on that side. The save in the second half from the shot of De Bruyne was maybe the best save ever from Maarten.”
