Phelan ‘greedy’ for more at Hull

Mike Phelan says Hull City are right where he wanted them to be at this stage of the season and has urged his players to kick on and move back up the Premier League table.

The Tigers made a fast start this season with two wins from their first two games in August after being written off as relegation certainties due to a small squad, lack of quality and no permanent manager.

Phelan was appointed at Steve Bruce’s successor last month but since August, Hull’s form has been worrying, with six defeats on the bounce recently ended by victory against Southampton.

And Phelan wants to use that result as a catalyst for an upturn in form, beginning against Sunderland on Saturday.

“I did say to the players a couple of weeks ago that I wanted ten points as soon as possible. That is a good marker, ten points after ten games,” added Phelan.

“A lot of teams would be happy with that. We missed that by one game. Now we have got to that stage, more or less, then I am greedy for more. The players know that.

“I felt we could have had a couple of more points along the way, if I am honest.

“We won’t let the players get carried away because of that. We can only look forward and not back.”
