Red Devils boss Mourinho wishes he Carricks manager ten years ago
Jose Mourinho has admitted he wishes he was Michael Carrick’s manager ten years ago, and praised the veteran midfielder’s impact on his United side this season.
Carrick is out of contract at the end of the campaign, having only signed a one-year deal in June, but Mourinho’s recent comments suggest he would like the former West Ham man to stay at Old Trafford.
Born in the north east, Carrick grew up playing for the famous Wallsend Boys Club, before he was picked up by the Hammers aged 16.
He came through the youth system there before going on to make 136 appearances for the first team – earning a move to White Hart Lane.
And after two years in north London Sir Alex Ferguson came calling, tempting the then 25-year-old with a move north.
Since then Carrick has won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, a Champions League and a Club World Cup.
And the Portuguese boss wishes he was at the helm ten years ago, to benefit from a Carrick at the peak of his powers.

“He is such a fantastic player and it is a pity, I always loved him, but instead of being his manager when he was 25 I am his manager when he is 35,” said Mourinho.
“We have a good understanding. We know when he can play. We know when he is ready and when he needs a rest. I am still having Michael Carrick and probably for one more season.
“That’s life. It is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us.”
