Conte ecstatic with Cesc Blues influence

Antonio Conte had plenty to smile about following Chelsea’s superb victory 3-1 at Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime, but the Italian singled out forgotten man Cesc Fabregas’ contribution after the match.

The 29-year-old Spaniard made his first appearance for the Blues since September’s 3-0 humbling at former club Arsenal.

In that time, Chelsea had turned their form around to go on a seven-game winning run, but Fabregas ensured they made it eight in a row in Manchester City’s own backyard.

He produced an assured performance in the centre of the Blues’ midfield in place of the injured Nemanja Matić, brilliantly assisting Diego Costa for the equaliser before Willian and Eden Hazard sealed a vital three points.

And Conte was thrilled Fabregas had slotted straight back into his line-up.

“I’m pleased for Cesc above all because this game wasn’t easy for him,” he said.

“The last game he played for Chelsea in the line-up was against Arsenal, and then he had an injury. He recovered and I’m very happy for his performance.

“He must continue to improve. For me to have more options is good. It’s important to have the whole squad available.

“We have to wait for the first part of the season [to call ourselves title contenders] because we know this league is not easy. Now we are playing very well.

“We are playing good football, we have good confidence, but it’s important to continue to work and improve. There is room to improve.”
