Morgan credits backroom staff after Leicester City’s SPOTY award

Captain Wes Morgan praised the Leicester City backroom staff after the squad picked up the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award last night.

Recognised for winning the 2015/16 Premier League title, the entire team appeared on stage alongside coach Claudio Ranieri, who picked up Coach of the Year, at Birmingham’s Genting Arena.

Ranieri joined the Foxes in July 2015 after a miraculous recovery in the previous season had kept them in the Premier League under former manager Nigel Pearson.

An incredible 38 games later, City were crowned champions having lost just three of their Premier League fixtures.

Skipper Morgan said: “I want to thank everyone behind the scenes at Leicester. They contribute so much to what we strive for and work towards.

“The gaffer has been incredible. He joined us and galvanised us and turned us into a winning team. We had a fantastic season.”

“It’s a huge honour to receive this award. What we achieved was absolutely incredible.

“No one thought we could achieve it. It was something that people thought was impossible but we proved it was possible.”

Currently 15th in the league, a ten-man Leicester salvaged a 2-2 draw against Stoke on Saturday and face Everton on Boxing Day before tackling West Ham United on New Year’s Eve.
