Versatility key for Funes Mori and Toffees

Ramiro Funes Mori insists he is happy to play in whatever defensive system is asked of him and believes the versatility can only serve Everton well for the rest of the season.

Ronald Koeman elected to play a back three against champions Leicester City in their last outing, with the Toffees more than holding firm to take all three points at the King Power Stadium.

Normally suited to a four-strong defensive unit, the Argentinian was joined at the back by Ashley Williams and Mason Holgate, while Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman occupied roles as wing-backs.

And with another away trip to come in the shape of Hull City on Friday, Funes Mori is adamant the Toffees can go from strength to strength in the system.

The 25-year-old was also keen to heap praise on partner Holgate, a man five years his junior, predicting big things after the youngster’s fifth Premier League outing of the season.

“When you practice this formation, if you do it well then it is going to come out well,” he said.

“I like to play either way, a back-four or back-three, but we have to work on that.

“It [the win] builds up a lot of confidence. We always have situations and opportunities to score goals. Starting from the goalkeeper and backline, it gives the team confidence. I think we all did a really good job defending.

“Mason has a big future – he’s a class player. He’s showed that at the beginning of the season when he played in those games.”
