Bolo Zenden praises Sunderland faithful

Though bottom place in the Premier League makes unhappy reading for Sunderland fans, midfield legend Bolo Zenden has given them cause for cheer.

Dutch midfielder Zenden, 40, spent time at Chelsea and Barcelona, but finished up a stellar career in Sunderland and played a part in a tenth-place finish during his final season.

David Moyes’ men would certainly take tenth at this stage, but for Zenden, even when times are bleak, the BLack Cats at least have the consolation of their fervent supporters.

“For the people living there and supporting the club, they all want to support the team in the Premier League because that’s the highest league possible,” he said.

“They want to enjoy their football and come to Premier League games so of course the players need to know what they are fighting for – not just their own sake but for the people in the area and the people of the club.

“I had a great time and I did enjoy it because for me I enjoyed playing the most.

“As soon as you are not involved it’s sometimes hard to take. I was actually pleased to play my last game away at West Ham, win it 3-0 and score a goal.

“That took us to tenth and was probably the best thing out of my time at Sunderland.

“During my time there we had a spell when it was tough and players moved on but that’s part and parcel of the industry.”
