Injured Zarate lays down European gauntlet for Hornets

Seasons at Vicarage Road may normally be focused on avoiding relegation, but Mauro Zarate is adamant Watford must be focusing on the upper echelons of the Premier League.

The Hornets currently occupy 12th place in the top flight, nine points clear of relegation danger with just 12 matches remaining – looking destined to replicate, if not better, their 45-point haul from last season.

But rather than just specialising in keeping their heads above water, Zarate is calling on Walter Mazzarri’s side to push higher.

The Hornets reached the semi-finals on the FA Cup last season before losing to Crystal Palace, and having seen Leicester do the remarkable and win the Premier League title, the forward is confident his side has what it takes to do something special and experience European football.

“I still have big ambitions and things I want to achieve,” said Zarate, whose season ended with injury against West Ham on Saturday.

“Maybe there are many teams in the Premier League who are bigger than Watford, but Leicester won the league last season so we already know that anything is possible.

“One thing for sure is that the club has a lot of ambition so you never know, maybe one day we can arrive in the Europa League or win a cup.

“We will need to play very well to do that, but if we can achieve something like this at Watford it will be very good for the club.”
