Olsson: Swans have quality to beat the drop

Martin Olsson has only been in Wales for a couple of weeks, but the Swansea City defender insists his new club have already shown the right credentials to avoid relegation.

The then-managerless Swans ended 2016 on an abysmal note with a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, with many predicting that defeat to be the catalyst for relegation.

But three wins in their subsequent four Premier League games has suggested a changing of the tide at the Liberty Stadium, with Paul Clement’s side showing their worth with an impressive win over Liverpool.

And Olsson, who made the switch from Championship side Norwich this January, is convinced his new teammates have what it takes to avoid the drop.

“Before I even came here, I saw Swansea as a club with a lot of potential and a lot of quality,” said the 28-year-old.

“The club wasn’t in a great position in the table – I knew I was coming to a club that was in the relegation zone.

“But what I thought of the club before I came here has been proved right. There is a lot of potential and quality within this team.

“We showed that we can go to Anfield and beat Liverpool when no-one expected us to get anything from that game.

“Then we beat Southampton, who are a very strong side from goalkeeper to striker. It’s not easy to do that, especially when the pressure is on you.

“Other teams around you start to get results, but you can’t let that affect you. We must concentrate only on ourselves, and that’s what we’ll do.”
