Victory at Bournemouth is just the start, says Palace’s Tomkins

Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins hopes the club’s win at Bournemouth can act as a catalyst for the Eagles to climb the Premier League table.

Tuesday’s victory was the club’s first under Sam Allardyce since the former England boss took over from Alan Pardew on December 23.

However, it was not enough to lift them out of the relegation zone, and the Eagles remain 18th with Allardyce’s side entertaining one of his former clubs, Sunderland, at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

And 27-year-old Tomkins, who joined Palace in the summer from West Ham United, wants the Vitality Stadium triumph to pave the way for more points in the weeks to come.

“It was massive to get three points in the Premier League and although it hasn’t changed our position, we have brought a lot of teams into it and hopefully now we can go from strength to strength.

“We can’t worry about what others are doing – we have to concentrate on ourselves and that will speak for itself if we keep winning games.

“We know we are in a bad position, but we have to make it happen.

“It was a decent effort from all of us and was nice for the manager to get the first win, and a clean sheet, and more so for the fans, who have shown great support and stuck with us.”
