Fonte desperate to set record straight at West Ham

Jose Fonte admits the international break has come at a bad time for West Ham as they look to put the disappointment of their defeat to Leicester City last time out behind them.

The former Southampton defender has now joined up with his Portugal teammates for their internationals against Hungary and Sweden.

But the pain of the 3-2 defeat at the London Stadium against the Premier League champions is still fresh in the mind.

And Fonte admits he and his teammates must put things right for the season run-in as the look to improve on their 12th place position.

“Yeah, it’s difficult to take, obviously. Nobody is happy, everyone is disappointed. But the only way to turn things around is to work and stick together and find a solution,” he said.

“We wish the next game was just around the corner. But we have got to regroup, analyse things and stop conceding these goals. We’re better than this.

“I look forward to it, obviously. It’s always an honour to play for your country. It will be good to see the boys and to be with them, but I want to succeed here. I want to win here.

“Obviously I want to win with Portugal and we’ll give our best but I want to win with West Ham and start to put things right and start to get good results, because that’s why I came here; to win. I’ll be giving my all to put that right.”
