Leicester City’s Shakespeare backs Agnew after Karanka sacking

Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare has given his backing to Middlesbrough’s assistant head coach Steve Agnew following Aitor Karanka’s sacking.

Middlesbrough sit 19th in the Premier League with just 19 goals scored from their 27 league games to date, five less than the next lowest scorers Sunderland.

Shakespeare knows all about the move from assistant to man in charge having taken over following Claudio Ranieri’s sacking at Leicester City.

He has since guided the Foxes to back-to-back Premier League wins and a stunning 2-0 success over Sevilla to get his side into the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals.

“Steve’s his own man, he’s been in the game long enough he’ll have his own thoughts, his own ideas and I wish him all the best,” he said.

“It is a big step but one that I think he’s more than capable of.

“It’s never nice to see a manager lose his job, I’ve said that before.

“Obviously I’ve said as well it’s a result driven business, we know that, and I think we have to respect the wishes of Middlesbrough and their owners and concentrate on our own job.”
