Romeu: Redmond’s Saints performances deserving of England nod
Midfielder Oriol Romeu believes it is only a matter of time before Southampton teammate Nathan Redmond gets a call-up for the England squad.
Redmond has been in a rich vein of form since signing from Championship outfit Norwich City in the summer, justifying his £10m price tag with a plethora of impressive performances on the south coast.
That was none more so than in victory over Watford last time out, scoring a double to help his side to a 4-3 victory with his fifth and sixth goals of the season.
The 23-year-old also showed his ability for the big stage, putting in a strong display in the EFL Cup final despite his side missing out to Manchester United.

It’s performances like those which Romeu feels is deserving of a nod for England for his teammate, following in the support of Saints manager Claude Puel for his midfielder, with fixtures against Germany and Lithuania to come later this month.
“If he keeps playing like that I would say he’s quite close,” said Romeu of Redmond, who played for the national side from U16 right through to U21 level.
“He’s scoring goals, he’s getting assists and playing very good football. It’s a matter of time before he plays for England.
“He’s very good for us, he’s in amazing form. As a player we want him to be scoring goals and running at defenders.
“Hopefully he can carry on like that. He was a real threat. Every time he attacks and goes into the box, he’s ready to shoot.”
