Stoke striker Walters reveals penalty confusion
Diving is sadly part and parcel of the modern game whether we like or not.
And while Jonathan Walters insists he didn’t dive to earn a penalty against Chelsea, the Stoke striker revealed he was not sure where the contact came from.
Trailing to Willian’s opener, Walters was felled in the penalty area by Gary Cahill later in the first half, dusting himself off to slam home the spotkick.
However, the frontman wasn’t sure if the contact had come from a Chelsea player or a team-mate before leveller matters from 12 yards.
“It was the back of my foot,” said Walters, whose Stoke side couldn’t hold on for a point as Cahill hit a late winner, before Phil Bardsley was sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time.
“I got a big rake down the back of my Achilles so there was contact but I didn’t know who it was from.
“I didn’t know if it was our player or theirs when I went down.
“I wanted to take it so I was happy to score, but it was more important about the result and we didn’t get it.”
