Getting to 40 points does not mean Watford are safe, says Mazzarri

Watford may have reached the magical 40-point mark in the Premier League, but boss Walter Mazzarri is refusing to admit the Hornets are safe from relegation.

Etienne Capoue’s goal just before half-time gave Mazzarri’s men a 1-0 win over struggling Swansea City at Vicarage Road.

The victory means Watford stay in the comfort of mid-table – they are tenth in the league – 12 points clear of the relegation zone with just six games to play.

But despite this cushion, Mazzarri remains tight-lipped on proclaiming his side as safe from the drop until it is mathematically confirmed.

However, he was quick to praise his players on reaching the 40-point milestone, despite having injuries to several key players throughout the season.

“Until the maths and the numbers say [so], then we are not safe,” said Mazzarri. “I always say that we try to reach the maximum we can and we have to do this for the next games.

“This is also the mentality that I want to give to my players for next year.

“With what has happened this season, to have 40 points with six games to go is a very good record.

“I also want to thank (Adrian) Mariappa and (Christian) Kabasele and the players that have played less games because they have been great.”
