Gomes confident Hornets can upset Liverpool
Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has called on his teammates to put November’s 6-1 thrashing at Liverpool out of their minds when the two teams face each other again on Monday night.
It was a match Gomes was forced out of after 33 minutes due to injury with the score at 2-0 and replacement Costel Pantilimon was a man under siege at Anfield for the rest of that afternoon.
The emphatic result put Liverpool top of league at the time, but their title challenge has since fallen away and Jurgen Klopp’s men are now fighting to secure Champions League qualification.
Watford meanwhile are trying to secure their highest-ever Premier League finish, having won their last three home games without conceding a goal.
The Hornets have previously beaten Manchester United and Everton at Vicarage Road this season and Gomes wants them to believe that they can cause another upset.
Gomes said: “It was a heavy defeat, but every game is different. We cannot look at that game and think we are going to lose again and concede six.
“If we do not approach the game well, we can have a heavy defeat. We are able to do good things and are able compete as well.
“We reached 40 points by getting points from not just teams below us, but also getting some points from teams above us and that is important.
“It is important that we need to believe and if we believe we can do very good things.”
