‘He is a great player’ – Atletico ace Godin hails Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy
Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin believes that Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy would fit in to ‘the vast majority of teams in the world’.
Uruguayan defender Godin, 31, has come up against the Foxes’ all-action frontman in the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League and feels that England striker Vardy has the quality to play for the likes of Diego Simeone’s Spanish giants.
Godin, who won the 2013-14 La Liga title with Atletico and has finished as a runner-up in two Champions League finals, has played alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa, Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani for club and country, and reckons that Vardy, 30, is cut from the same cloth.
“He is a great player,” said Godin, who captains Uruguay.
“He fights and competes in every game, and never gives a single ball up for lost.
“A striker like that is fundamental for a team that plays the way Leicester do – they wouldn’t be the Leicester we know without him.”
When asked if Vardy would get in Los Rojiblancos’ current squad, Godin said: “Of course he would.
“I think he would fit in at the vast majority of teams in the world. Who wouldn’t want a striker who kills himself for the team and then gives you so many attacking solutions?
“We know how good he is and how capable he is of creating chances on his own.”
