Klopp baffled by Reds defensive struggles

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he does not understand how his side have let in so many goals in the Premier League, conceding 40 in 33 games.

The Reds manager said there is nothing wrong with his team’s defending style and that they are not conceding goals because they are too high or fail to defend counter-attacks.

Though Liverpool have not lost a Premier League game since February, they have conceded seven goals in their last seven matches.

However, as Liverpool look to close the nine-point gap with Chelsea in their last five fixtures, Klopp admits there is room for improvement in this area.

“They don’t make sense as a statistic,” he said.

“Not a lot of teams have outplayed us. It is not that they create chance after chance after chance, we defend really well.

“It is not interesting how you concede goals because it’s still a goal, but for us it is important.

“We are a good defending team, the highest level defending team, but at the end we still concede goals from different situations.

“We have to improve, of course, but it is not the biggest issue we have.

“We have conceded a few around set-pieces and a few counters, but not attacks. The number of goals we’ve conceded is absolutely too high.

“It is really rare in my personal history that we concede goals like that big number, but we will work on it 100 per cent. But it’s not about a defending style.”
