Schneiderlin: Burnley slap was what Everton needed

Burnley gave Everton a slap in the face according to midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin during their 3-1 win over the Clarets at Goodison Park.

The visitors held Everton at home until the 49th minute when Phil Jagielka nodded in, but Sam Vokes soon equalised for Sean Dyche’s side as Ronald Koeman’s men struggled to break down the dogged Burnley defence.

But break it down they did, with Burnley reverting to type and losing away from home once again, as a Ben Mee own goal and another strike for top scorer Romelu Lukaku eventually gave the Toffees a two-goal victory.

Schneiderlin, though, said it took the resistance from Burnley to prompt Everton into a more attacking style of play.

“The first half was a nice slap on our face to make sure we got on the front-foot,” said the Frenchman.

“Burnley are a tough team and there were a lot of second balls. They won a lot of those in the first half and we had to correct that in the second half and be more composed.

“We were lucky to be level at half-time and after that we just had the extra quality to win the game.

“We are happy but it’s going to be up to us to correct that to keep this unbeaten run going.”
