Meulensteen: Everton striker Lukaku needs to add to his game
Romelu Lukaku is not good enough to play for Manchester United, according to former Red Devils coach Rene Meulensteen.
The Everton hitman is reportedly set for a big-money move to one of the Premier League’s heavyweights this summer, after an impressive campaign in which he has fired in 24 league goals, so far.
His former club Chelsea are said to be leading the chase, but Manchester United are also on the hunt for a striker this summer after the serious knee injury suffered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
But Meulensteen, a renowned coach who spent 12 years at Old Trafford before going on to manage Fulham, has advised his former side against splashing the cash.
“Don’t get me wrong here, Lukaku has obviously had a fantastic season and he is a goalscorer,” he said.
“But at a club like Manchester United you need more strings to your bow.
“That is where he falls short, I think, and it’s something that’s not as exposed at a club like Everton.
“But if you play at the highest level, your finesse on the ball in the final third, your decision making has to be absolutely spot on.
“Yes he would bring power, he would bring strength, but when you look over the years at the strikers United have had, does he fit in the same line of strikers? I don’t think so.”
