Gray: I’ve learned a lot already in the Premier League for Burnley
Burnley stiker Andre Gray insists he is still coming of age as a Premier League hitman after failing to hit double figures in his debut season at the top table of English Football.
The 25-year-old, who was signed from Brentford in 2015 for a then club-record £6million, notched up nine goals from 26 starts in the league, plus a further nine appearances from the bench.
Gray’s 23 goals in his first season at Turf Moor spearheaded the Clarets’ 2015-16 promotion success.
But his efforts this term were still crucial in helping the Clarets maintain their top-flight status, and just three seasons on from plying his trade in the National League with Luton Town, Gray is adamant he is learning the lessons required to make the grade in the Premier League.
“I’ve jumped up four or five leagues in three years, so I was never going to come into the Premier League and win the Golden Boot,” he said.
“It’s about learning and I think I’ve learned a lot. A lot of it is mentality and I’m hungry to get better.
“I’ve got a lot to work on. I think I’ve got a good base and it’s just tuning things up and hopefully, I can step on and do a lot better, like I did when I was in the Championship.
“I think it’s good I can look back and think that I could have scored more and done better. I will come back fit and ready again and learn from my mistakes this year and work on what I can.
“Four or five years ago, I never thought I’d be in the Premier League so it’s been a good season overall.”
