Lovren: Liverpool must keep fighting for Champions League
Liverpool may have missed a glorious opportunity to tighten their grip on a Champions League spot over the weekend but Dejan Lovren has urged the Reds to keep on fighting.
The Merseysiders could have moved seven points clear of fifth-place Manchester United with victory over Southampton at Anfield on Sunday, but instead drew 0-0.
James Milner saw his penalty saved by Saints stopper Fraser Forster as Liverpool also missed a slew of other chances, meaning the Red Devils are now just five points behind with a game in hand, while sixth-placed Arsenal are only seven back having played two less matches.
Victory in their final two fixtures, away to West Ham and at home to Middlesbrough, would still guarantee the Reds Champions League football and defender Lovren expects the team to quickly shake off any frustration.
“We could have won against Southampton but football is unpredictable,” said Lovren.
“We have, I would say, not problems against Southampton, but we can’t find the goal. It’s definitely a big disappointment.
“We need to keep going, to fight now in the next two games and to win.
“Milly [Milner] has scored so many goals from penalty kicks this season and we almost needed it every time.
“You think, like all season, Milly will score [the penalty] but one time he needs to miss and that’s happened here unfortunately. It happens to everyone.”
