Pickford hails ‘top drawer’ Sunderland fans
Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford has hailed the Black Cats’ fans who have travelled far and wide to support their team in a disappointing season that has ended in relegation.
Pickford has been magnificent in between the sticks for Sunderland and was justly voted the Supporters’ Young Player of the Season as his performances have earned him England call-ups, PFA Young Player of the Year nominations and high praise.
Top-scorer Jermain Defoe scooped up the Player of the Year award with his 15-goal haul so far this season.
And Pickford praised the undying support he has received from the fans during a testing year as Sunderland prepare for life in the Championship with their final two games of the season, starting at home to Swansea on Saturday.
“It’s obviously a nice feeling to win the award and it shows I’ve done quite well this season,” said Pickford.
“I also won the North East Football Writers’ award, so two in a year isn’t bad, and it’s nice when hard work pays off.
“The fans have been top drawer this season, like they always are, home and away. I was a fan and I’ve been there on the terraces chanting with my mates. It’s amazing to have one (chant) of my own.”
