Standard set for next season, says Man City skipper Kompany

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany said his side’s 5-0 demolition of Watford on the final day of the Premier League season set the benchmark for the 2017/18 campaign.

City pulled the Hornets apart with a clinical display, which saw them secure third place in the division and automatic Champions League qualification.

Defender Kompany was among those playing his part, scoring three goals after playing the last eight matches of the season following a series of injury problems.

And City’s captain has urged his players to take their impressive form at the end of the season into next year.

“We showed so many signs of things we have wanted to achieve this season in our final game against Watford,” said 31-year-old Kompany.

“We finished the season strongly and now we must make sure we take that form into next season and hit that benchmark week in, week out.

“We lost once in our final 17 Premier League games and it was important to gain direct passage to the Champions League group stages by finishing third.

“When you recognise it’s not been a perfect season, the last thing you want to do is compromise the next season – now everything is set-up nicely for all the good things that can happen in football and on this occasion, it was job done.

“We can now look forward to the next campaign and being back in contention in four competitions.”
