Tarkowski: Burnley peering up the table, not down

Burnley are all-but safe in the Premier League and James Tarkowski is now looking to climb the table in the final few games.

The Clarets’ survival is not yet mathematically guaranteed but lying 14th, seven points above the drop zone with three games to play, it would take a remarkable set of circumstances for them to drop into the Championship.

The club had never before avoided relegation from the Premier League but Tarkowski – who made his first league start of the season in the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend – is now dreaming of the top half.

And sitting just two points off Southampton in ninth, that dream could well become a reality.

“You get to where you deserve to be in this league. Nobody gets anywhere by luck,” said Tarkowski.

“We have earned every point so far but we still need to carry on with our job. We’re not guaranteed safety yet, so there are a few more points to pick up.

“That’s the main priority first, to keep our Premier League status, but after that we have more targets to go and push up the league, so that’s what we have to do after that.

“We are still very much focused on doing a job, putting in performances and picking up points to the end of the season.

“It’s really tight from 16th/17th to eighth or ninth. There’s only a few points in it, so for us it’s got to be an incentive to go and push up the league, rather than looking below us.”
