Terry hails Chelsea owner Abramovich after final appearance
John Terry thanked Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after his final game at the club, declaring him the best owner in the world on his final day at Stamford Bridge.
The 36-year-old, who is leaving the club after 22 years, went out at the top, as Chelsea won the Premier League title for a fifth time – although he did not feature as much as he would have liked under Antonio Conte this term.
But his status as a Blues legend was cemented long ago, alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech as the club became a force at the top of English football thanks to Abramovich’s millions.
Abramovich, perhaps like Terry, is loved by Chelsea fans but disliked by many others – as he represents a new era of heavy foreign investment in the Premier League.
But after playing his part in Chelsea’s 5-1 final-day win against Sunderland, Terry paid tribute to the Russian.
“Today is one of the most difficult days of my life,” he said after being given a guard of honour as he exited the pitch.
“I’ve been very fortunate to work with some unbelievable players and managers throughout my career. I’m thankful to every single one of them.
“We all have to thank Roman Abramovich. I’d like to thank him and all the board. He’s the best owner in world football.”
