United’s Rashford relishing praise from Mourinho
Working for one of the hardest task masters in world football, Marcus Rashford could easily have been overawed by Jose Mourinho.
But when the Portuguese ‘special one’ commented that the teenager was one of his most trusted players, it was just reward for a season in which the local hero has become an integral part of Mourinho’s plans – especially in the absence of superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Having scored 11 times in 51 appearances for United this season, including vital goals in recent games against Chelsea, Anderlecht and Celta Vigo, Rashford has kept up the momentum he generated last season.
After hitting the big time with a run of goals after scoring on his first team debut, Rashford was a surprise inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad last summer.
He scored in a friendly against Australia ahead of the tournament and had made five more appearances for the senior side this season, proving his worth not just for United, but also his potential for England.
But the striker remains humble, and valued the recent praise from his club manager.
“It’s a massive thing when a manager like him says that,” said the 19-year-old.
“The best thing about it is that you’ve earned it. He didn’t just come in and say ‘there you go – play every game’. He’s made us all work for his trust and respect.
“Sometimes it’s difficult and sometimes it’s easier but the players are all battling and improving to work for him. It’s massive for us and you can see how everyone’s come on this year.”
