Former Leeds man reckons Monk is keen on Middlesbrough ‘project’
David Prutton believes Garry Monk is searching for a long-term managerial project and that might make Middlesbrough the most attractive proposition for the ex-Leeds United boss.
Monk walked away from Elland Road last week – two days after Andrea Radrizzani was installed as the club’s new chairman – and midfielder-turned-pundit Prutton, who spent three seasons at Leeds, thinks the Boro hot seat appeals hugely to the 38-year-old.
Following their relegation from the Premier League last term, Boro are yet to clarify what the future holds for caretaker chief Steve Agnew but are expected to bring in a new manager, with Monk the bookies’ favourite.
“I know Garry is favourite for the Middlesbrough job and it will always be the case that Leeds fans would be upset by something like that,” said Prutton.
“Middlesbrough’s fans might say: ‘but we have just come out of the Premier League’, albeit with an absolute whimper, but they have got the most recent Premier League experience and when you look at their ownership, it has been consistent.
“They have also been financially sound.
“I don’t know if I am biased but, having played at Boro and at Elland Road, I can tell you which ones are noisier and a noisier place to play football, which is pretty obvious.
“But you hear about projects now and all that type of thing and for Garry, that wasn’t at Leeds.
“I have heard Garry talk about projects and being in a position to build something. Garry obviously views that as being better elsewhere.”
