Jagielka looking ahead to Toffees’ European return

Phil Jagielka knows Everton have a busy season ahead of them because of their European commitments but is relishing the chance to impress on the continent again.

The Toffees finished seventh in the Premier League last season, ending up in something of a league of their own, eight points behind the top six and 15 clear of eighth spot.

As a result they will return to the Europa League, although they have to qualify at the end of July, and for Jagielka, that means the pre-season will be more important than ever for Everton.

“There is going to be a key tie in pre-season that we hope to get through and then the journey and excitement begins,” he said.

“There will be long weeks playing a lot of games but, hopefully if we qualify, the manager can sort out his squad and decide what he going to do for each game.

“It’s another test for us but one we are looking forward to.

“We needed to get back into the top half of the league and push for those European places, and we’ve done that.

“We could and should have gone further in the cup competitions, but that wasn’t to be and it’s something to look forward to next year.

“It’s a very positive season and something to work off. We are not the complete project yet and we need to make sure everyone comes back fit and raring to go in pre-season.

“With a couple of additions, hopefully it will be a good season.”
