Leicester’s Vardy set to miss England games through injury
Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has withdrawn from the England squad with a minor thigh problem.
The Foxes frontman, 30, netted 16 times for the 2015/16 Premier League champions, finishing the season as their top scorer for the second campaign in a row.
He now has 66 goals in 192 appearances in all competitions for Craig Shakespeare’s side, having netted 24 times in 38 games in the Foxes’ title-winning season.
On the international stage, Vardy has six goals in 16 games for England, the most memorable being one of the strikes in England’s 2-1 win over Wales in the European Championships in France last summer, with Daniel Sturridge netting an injury-time winner after Gareth Bale’s opener.
But despite being set to add to his international caps, Vardy has pulled out of Gareth Southgate’s squad to face Scotland and France.
“Jamie Vardy has left the England squad as a precaution after picking up a minor injury in training at St. George’s Park yesterday,” said an FA statement.
“The Leicester City striker won’t play a part in either Saturday’s World Cup qualifier in Scotland or Tuesday’s trip to France.
“No further players are due to be added to the squad at this moment in time.”
