‘Manchester United will recruit the right goalscorer,’ says legendary hitman Law
Manchester United legend Denis Law is backing his old club to rediscover their goalscoring edge next season.
United were only the eighth-highest scorers in the Premier League last term – the likes of Everton and Bournemouth found the net more – and have released Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who hit 28 goals in 46 appearances but is likely to be sidelined until 2018 with the knee injury he suffered against Anderlecht in April.
With transfer talk currently dominating the headlines, Jose Mourinho is expected to be in the hunt for at least one new centre-forward, with the likes of Alvaro Morata, Andrea Belotti and Romelu Lukaku among the names heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Law, who scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for the Red Devils, reckons that Mourinho will get the requisite firepower through the door as United prepare to return to the Champions League.
“Jose will know what he needs and I am sure he will get that,” said the 77-year-old Scotsman.
“I remember Bill Shankly [former Liverpool manager] when I was a youngster and his philosophy was to get a good defence and don’t concede goals.
“But at the other end, you need to have players who can score goals.
“You get the defence right to begin with and then you get the forwards to score goals. There is a lot of competition for the best goal-scorers and you have to pay a lot of money, which they are doing.
“It would be a bonus if we could get one of the young strikers to come through.”
