Slutsky ‘would be a great appointment for Hull’

Hull City will have secured a major coup should Leonid Slutsky join the club as manager, according to those who know him best.

The Russian, who has enjoyed spells in charge of the national side and CSKA Moscow, has been linked with a move to the Tigers, who were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.

Marco Silva took charge in January after Mike Phelan’s exit, but despite a resurgence in home form, it was not enough to prevent City from going down.

Silva left his post to take over at Watford, and Slutsky has emerged as favourite for the vacancy at the KCOM Stadium.

If the move were to go ahead, it would be a terrific appointment for Hull, according to Russian football commentator John Bradley.

“He won three titles at CSKA Moscow, and those titles came while Zenit St Petersburg were spending millions bringing in the likes of Hulk and Axel Witsel,” Bradley said.

“Slutsky had a fraction of the budget, but still pipped them to the post three out of four years, which has given him real pedigree.

“Comparatively, I believe what Slutsky has done in his football management career so far trumps anything Silva has done. He succeeded against the odds in Moscow and I believe he is now ready for the next challenge.”
