Surman: Bournemouth can build on their strong finish to the season

Andrew Surman wants Bournemouth to build on their top half finish in the Premier League and push on next season.

Eddie Howe’s side ended the season unbeaten in their final five games of the season – including three wins – and finished ninth which is their highest ever top-flight finish.

Surman, 30, made 22 appearances for Bournemouth in the Premier League but missed a number of games due to a medial knee ligament injury sustained in April against Southampton.

But he was fit enough to play the final game of the season.

He believes that run shows how far the Cherries have come in recent years and is hopeful they can take that positive momentum into next season.

Surman said: “To finish ninth in our second season in the Premier League is a massive achievement.

“We all believed we could finish in the top half and we are probably a bit frustrated because we could have finished eighth.

“We had a bad run in January and February but came out of it really strongly. To be unbeaten in our last five games – having lost four of the final five last season – is testament to how far we have come.

“It was important to take momentum into the summer and into next season.”
