West Brom confident Morrison will be fit for start of next season

West Brom fans can rest easy this summer according to director of performance Mark Gillett, as he is sure Gareth McAuley, James Morrison, Hal Robson-Kanu and Matty Phillips will all be fit for the start of next season.

The quartet were part of a flurry of injuries for Tony Pulis’ squad during the recent internationals, with Morrison a particular worry after damaging his medial knee ligaments early on in Scotland’s draw against England earlier this month.

The 31-year-old midfielder played on regardless until half-time, but with plenty of time left this summer to work his magic, Gillett is positive Morrison will be fit enough to play a part in the Baggies’ pre-season – with Pulis taking the squad to Austria in July.

“It’s nothing too serious to worry about,” Gillett said. “We fully expect him to do things in Austria and we will manage his pre-season after that. We would expect him to be fit for the start of the season.

“There may be a requirement for some careful management throughout the pre-season schedule but there is nothing to prevent us thinking all four will be ‘good to go’ on August 12.

“I think that is a reasonable target for us and one we should be confident reaching.

“We took a decision with Matty at the end of the season that we would focus on him being fully ready for this pre-season.

“The other issues are not serious and the rest the players are enjoying now will do them the power of good.”
