Gallagher given chance to impress at Saints and new deal on return from loan
Sam Gallagher has been tipped to make a big impression on his return to Southampton after signing a new four-year deal at St Mary’s.
The 21-year-old striker was sent on-loan at Blackburn Rovers last season, scoring 12 goals in their ultimately futile battle against relegation from the Championship.
He has since returned to Southampton and will be looking to convince new manager Mauricio Pellegrino that he deserves a shot at the first team.
And vice chairman of football Les Reed believes that Gallagher couldn’t ask for a better place to hone his skills than at Saints.
Reed said: “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time.
“Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.
“We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses.
“We are all looking forward to seeing Sam back here for pre-season and helping him take the next strides in his game at Southampton.”
