Leicester boss Shakespeare: Mendy out for rest of season following surgery

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare insists the Foxes will give Papy Mendy all the time he needs to recover after the midfielder was ruled out for the rest of the season following ankle surgery.

Frenchman Mendy switched to the King Power Stadium from Nice in the summer, but didn’t get off to the best start at his new club after hobbling off during his Premier League debut against Arsenal back in September.

Since then, the 24-year-old has made just eight appearances for Leicester, but was forced onto the sidelines once again when a floating bone was discovered in his ankle.

He has recently gone under the knife to fix the issue, and Shakespeare insists that opportunities will come for Mendy once he is back to full fitness.

“Everybody feels for him. He was training and you could tell he wasn’t quite at 100 per cent, so we pulled him out of that,” said Shakespeare.

“We sent him to see various specialists and now we think we’ve got to the root of the problem.

“We’re hoping that clears up and he’ll come back when he’s fully fit.

“He’s a very energetic player and he gets around the pitch. His passing ability is very good.

“We’ll have to be patient with him because sometimes players take a while to settle in.

“We know he felt the pressure in wanting to do well, but he needs to make sure he’s 100 per cent fit now.”
